How to Fish opens on Island 1, also called the Starter Rock, where you spawn near a crashed ship and the Lighthouse. Your first goal is simple: pick up Clams off the ground for food and early cash, buy the basic Crab Fishing Rod, and start selling crabs and shrimp. From there the Island 1 quest line runs Beer Can, Empty Beer Can, Spider Crab, Boat Keys, and Radar, after which you can sail to the next island. This beginner guide walks that whole opening hour in order, so you never sell the wrong item or stall out wondering what to do next.

Your First Minutes at the Lighthouse

You start with nothing but a basic rod and the ground loot around the Lighthouse. The first thing to do is pick up a Clam from the ground. A Clam can be eaten to refill your hunger, or handed to the Lighthouse Keeper in exchange for money, and both uses matter in the opening stretch.

Hunger is a real mechanic here, not flavor. Keep a Clam or two in reserve for healing, and convert the rest into starting cash through the Lighthouse Keeper. The early walkthrough route was completed on a solo save, but co-op players can follow the exact same main quest line, so nothing below changes if you bring friends.

The Core Loop: Cast, Catch, Then Subdue

Fishing itself is a three-step loop: cast your line, wait for a bite, and reel in. The part that surprises new players is what happens after the catch hits the shore. Hauling a creature onto land is not the same as capturing it, and you still have to subdue it with your fists, a melee weapon, or a gun before it counts as yours.

Once subdued, creatures can be sold for money. That money is the engine for the entire game, paying for better tackle, better weapons, and other upgrades. If you want a deeper breakdown of the fishing mechanics themselves, see the Fish Guide, and for bait choices check the Lure Guide.

Early Gear: What to Buy First

Your first key purchase is the basic Crab Fishing Rod, which the complete walkthrough lists at $3. With it, plus basic bait, you can catch early creatures like Brown Crab, Shrimp, and Lobster, which sell for the cash you need for the next steps.

After the rod, the priority order looks like this:

  1. Crab Fishing Rod ($3) to unlock reliable early catches.
  2. Sell crabs and shrimp until you can afford a Beer Can, which is a quest item, not a drink.
  3. Hot Dog, an early purchasable bait, when you want better fishing results.
  4. Brass Knuckles, a Knife, and sharpening upgrades to make the subdue phase faster and safer.

Combat upgrades matter more than they look. Because every catch has to be subdued on land, a weak early weapon turns each fishing trip into a brawl. If money feels tight, the Money Guide goes deeper on efficient selling.

The Island 1 Main Quest: Beer Can to Boat Keys

How to Fish is not a pure sandbox. Each island has NPCs, quests, and bosses, and finishing the quest chain is what unlocks travel to more dangerous waters. On Island 1 the chain is short and linear, and it all runs through the Lighthouse Keeper.

StepItemWhat to Do
1Beer CanBuy it with money from selling early catches
2Empty Beer CanGive the Beer Can to the Lighthouse Keeper to receive it
3Spider CrabUse the Empty Beer Can as quest bait to summon and defeat it
4Boat KeysTurn in the Spider Crab quest item to the Lighthouse Keeper
5RadarBuy it after getting the Boat Keys to find the next island

The Empty Beer Can is the quest bait used to summon the Spider Crab, the first boss. Beat it, deliver the quest item back to the Lighthouse Keeper, and he hands over the Boat Keys. That is the moment Island 1 is effectively cleared.

Do Not Skip the Radar

The Radar is the single most commonly missed purchase for new players. After the Boat Keys, nothing in the quest flow screams at you to buy it, but the Radar is how you locate the signal for the next island once you are out on the boat.

Without the Radar you can sail around aimlessly and assume the game has bugged out. Buy it as soon as the Boat Keys are in your pocket, then use it to track the next island signal. If you are playing in online co-op, lobbies support up to 8 players, and the Multiplayer page covers how joining works.

What Comes Next: Island 2 Preview

Once you reach Island 2, the structure repeats with harder creatures. The walkthrough route there is to buy better bait and weapons, collect 3 Leeches, and trade them for a Modified Leech.

The Modified Leech is the bait you need to take on the Giant Piranha, the Island 2 boss. The Leeches page covers where to find them, and the full Walkthrough picks up the quest line from this point island by island.

Common Beginner Mistakes

Most early frustration comes from a short list of avoidable errors:

  • Selling a quest item. The Empty Beer Can and boss quest drops are progression items; money from selling them is not worth a stalled quest.
  • Treating a landed catch as caught. If you do not subdue the creature on shore, you do not own it.
  • Ignoring hunger. Eat a Clam before a fight instead of discovering the hunger bar mid-boss.
  • Forgetting the Radar after the Boat Keys, then wandering the ocean with no destination.
  • Skipping cheap combat upgrades like Brass Knuckles and sharpening, which makes every subdue phase longer than it needs to be.

Hold On to Quest Items

Clear those five mistakes and the opening of How to Fish is a smooth hour: Clams, Crab Fishing Rod, Beer Can, Spider Crab, Boat Keys, Radar, and out to the wider map.
