How to Fish Blue Shark Boss: Summon & Strategy

Progression in How to Fish largely depends on hunting bosses and minibosses, because NPC quests send you after specific bosses to open up the next location. The Blue Shark sits in the middle of that ladder: by the time you reach it, you have already beaten the Spider Crab at the Lighthouse, The Old Pike, and the Giant Piranha whose quest opens the route to the next island.

The fight itself takes place on Island 3, the Desert island. It counts as an extra, Grill-related quest boss rather than a step in the main-line bait chain that leads to the Pufferfish, but the reward — the island's Grill — makes it effectively mandatory for anyone pushing through the walkthrough.

The Blue Shark does not spawn on its own — you summon it by fishing with a Standard Boss Lure. That puts it in the middle of the game's boss-lure ladder: The Old Pike answers to the Beginner Boss lure, the Blue Shark to the Standard Boss Lure, and the later Tuna to the Professional Boss Lure. Because you pick the moment of the summon, treat it like an exam you schedule yourself. Buy the shotgun first — if you fought The Old Pike earlier you should already own one, since that fight also assumed a shotgun purchase — and add a bullet upgrade on top. The Blue Shark has one signature move: it charges at you in a spinning pattern. The dangerous detail is how reliable that charge becomes up close — if the shark is near you when it launches the spin, it is almost guaranteed to connect. Every piece of advice about this boss comes back to that single rule of spacing.

A missed charge is your opening. When the shark commits to a spin and whiffs, you get a safe window to unload upgraded gunfire before it resets for the next run. Play the pattern rather than counting hits.

Both sources that document the full boss roster agree the shotgun is an absolute necessity for this fight — do not summon the Blue Shark without one. From there, the whole strategy is a keep-away loop:

1. Buy the shotgun and at least one bullet upgrade before touching the lure.
2. Summon the Blue Shark with the Standard Boss Lure.
3. Back off immediately and hold the longest distance the area allows.
4. When it spins at you and misses, unload the shotgun into it.
5. Re-establish distance and repeat the cycle until it goes down.

The all-bosses guides also recommend carrying healing items into dangerous boss fights, so topping up your supplies before the summon is cheap insurance. In multiplayer, lobbies support up to 8 players after Patch 1.0.4, and the same rules apply — keep the whole crew at range and focus fire during each missed charge.

The Blue Shark's reward is functional rather than financial: take its body to the Grillmaster on Island 3, and handing it over unlocks the island's Grill. In other words, the kill alone is not the finish line — the quest completes when the body changes hands, so do not sell or discard it before you have made the delivery.

Once the Grill is yours, the boss ladder continues with the Pufferfish, which needs a customized Carrot bait: you receive it from a tourist sitting on the island under a tree after catching a Needlefish. • Fighting at close range. Proximity is exactly what makes the spinning charge almost guaranteed to hit, so every second spent near the shark works against you.
• Summoning without the shotgun. Both roster guides treat it as mandatory, with a bullet upgrade as the comfortable minimum.
• Wasting the punish window. Your damage belongs in the moments after a missed charge; shooting into its approach means trading blows at the range where it excels.
• Mixing up the boss lures. The Blue Shark answers to the Standard Boss Lure — the Beginner and Professional versions belong to other fights.
• Selling the body. The Grillmaster needs it to unlock the Grill, so hand it over before you even think about the money.

Get the spacing right and the Blue Shark reduces to a single repeated pattern: bait the spin, punish the miss, and deliver the body. The Desert island's Grill is your reward.
