How to Fish Island 1 (Lighthouse): Complete Walkthrough

How to Fish Island 1 walkthrough for the Lighthouse: gather Clams, buy the Crab Fishing Rod, beat the Spider Crab boss, earn the Boat Keys, and reach Island 2.

Last updated: Aug 25, 2026

Island 1 in How to Fish is the Lighthouse starting area, called the Starter Rock in some guides, and every player begins there beside a crashed boat. You gather Clams for food and early cash, buy the basic Crab Fishing Rod, work through the Lighthouse Keeper's questline, then summon and defeat the Spider Crab boss using an Empty Beer Can. Winning that fight earns you the Boat Keys, and the Radar then points you to the signal of the next island. This walkthrough covers the entire starting island, from your first Clam to the moment you set sail.

Island 1 Overview: Lighthouse, the Starter Rock

The starting island goes by two names. The game and most guides call the area Lighthouse, after the building at its center, while some walkthroughs title it Island 1: The Starter Rock. Both names refer to the same place, so if you searched for how to fish island 1, you are in the right spot.

The area is small and everything on it matters. You begin next to a crashed boat, with the Lighthouse standing over the shore, Clams scattered on the ground, and the Lighthouse Keeper acting as the island's merchant and quest giver. Guides that map out the game's world list this starting area first, followed by Islands 2, 3, 4, and 5.

Island 1 also teaches the core loop you will repeat everywhere else: scavenge for food, catch and sell seafood, follow the quest giver's errands, beat a boss, and unlock the route onward. If this is your first session, our Beginner Guide and the Islands hub give broader context for everything below.

First Steps: Clams, Cash, and the Crab Fishing Rod

Your first job is picking up the Clams lying on the ground. They serve two purposes: eat them to restore hunger, or throw them to the Lighthouse Keeper in exchange for your starting cash. You need both, so split your early haul instead of spending every Clam on one use.

Your first key purchase is the basic Crab Fishing Rod, sold at the Lighthouse shop for $3. With the rod equipped, you can catch crabs and shrimp along the shore and sell them for money. The Free Lure works as bait, but a Hot Dog is the better bait in the early game, so switch to one as soon as you can.

Everything you can pull up at the Lighthouse:

CatchHow to Get It
ClamPicked up off the ground; eat for hunger or trade to the Lighthouse Keeper for cash
Rock Crab / Brown CrabCrab Fishing Rod with Free Lure or Hot Dog
ShrimpCrab Fishing Rod with Free Lure or Hot Dog
LobsterCrab Fishing Rod with Free Lure or Hot Dog
Spider Crab (boss)Summoned with the Empty Beer Can

Selling these catches is your first real income stream. For deeper strategies, see the Money Guide, the Lure Guide, and the full Fish Guide.

The Lighthouse Keeper Questline and the Empty Beer Can

The main quest on Island 1 runs through the Lighthouse Keeper. Keep talking to him and completing his requests as you fish; each step moves the questline forward and unlocks the next thing he sells or asks for.

The turning point is the Beer Can errand. Buy a Beer Can from him and hand it over, and he gives you back an Empty Beer Can. That empty can is not junk: it is the bait used to summon the Spider Crab, the boss of the Lighthouse area. Hold on to it until you are ready for the fight.

Before you use the can, gear up. The starting weapon upgrade path runs from Brass Knuckles to the Knife, with sharpening services improving your blade along the way. Walk into the boss fight with a real melee weapon and a stock of food, not just your fishing rod.

How to Beat the Spider Crab

The Spider Crab is the boss of Island 1, and it only appears when you use the Empty Beer Can as bait. Once summoned, the fight is a brawl rather than a fishing minigame: you beat it down with your melee weapon while keeping an eye on your health. This is why the preparation matters — bring food to eat during the fight and the best melee upgrade you can afford, ideally the Knife from the starting weapon path.

Treat your first attempt as a learning run and stock more healing than you think you need.

Don't Pop the Can Unprepared

When the Spider Crab goes down, you get the quest item the Lighthouse Keeper asked for. Take that item back to him and turn it in, and he rewards you with the Boat Keys — your access to the boat and the wider world. For strategies on this and later fights, check the Spider Crab page and the full Bosses list.

The Radar and Reaching Island 2

One last purchase stands between you and the open sea: the Radar. It is a shop item, not a quest reward — you buy it from the Lighthouse Keeper for $10, and it is easy to overlook because nothing forces you to pick it up.

Do not skip it. The Radar is the key tool for locating the signals of later islands, and using it to track down the next island's signal is what actually completes the starting island's main questline. With the Boat Keys from the Spider Crab turn-in and the Radar in hand, you can sail out and follow the signal to Island 2.

This is also the point where many players group up. How to Fish supports online co-op lobbies of up to 8 players, and the islands beyond the starting area are where a crew starts to shine — see the Multiplayer page if you want company for the trip.

Common Mistakes on Island 1

  • Searching the map for "Island 1." The game labels the area Lighthouse, and Island 1 is simply the name guides (and search results) use for it.
  • Eating every Clam you pick up. You also need to throw Clams to the Lighthouse Keeper for starting cash, so split your haul between hunger and money.
  • Sticking with the Free Lure too long. A Hot Dog is the better early bait and speeds up your first hours of fishing.
  • Triggering the Spider Crab with no food and no melee upgrade. Buy the Knife first; sharpening services make it even better.
  • Sailing away without the Radar. It is easy to miss, but without it you cannot track the signals that lead to Islands 2 through 5.

With the boss beaten, the Boat Keys earned, and the Radar equipped, Island 1 is complete. Set sail, follow the signal, and the rest of the Islands open up from there.
