How to Fish Bosses: Full List and How to Beat Them

All how to fish bosses in one place: summon items, fight strategies, and unlock order for every boss from the Spider Crab to the Mutated Bowhead Whale.

Last updated: Aug 25, 2026

There are ten how to fish bosses and minibosses, and most of them are unskippable: NPC quests ask you to take down a specific boss before the next island unlocks. Every boss is summoned with a specific item — an empty beer can, a tiered boss lure, or bait traded from an NPC — and each one falls to a repeatable pattern. Below is the full list in progression order with the summon item, the fight plan, and the mistakes that waste your time.

How Boss Progression Works

Progression in How to Fish largely depends on hunting bosses and minibosses, because several of them gate access to new islands. The story moves forward through NPC quests, and those quests involve taking down certain bosses to progress to the next location. Your adventure begins at the Lighthouse, where defeating the Spider Crab rewards you with the keys for the boat.

Killing the boss is only half the job. For progression bosses, you also need to keep the quest item the fight produces and deliver it back to the NPC who asked for it. If your radar or quest tracker has not updated after a kill, check the delivery step before assuming the game bugged out.

Bosses scale up fast. Early fights are manageable with basic gear, but by the mid-game you are expected to own the shotgun, and the final whale fights expect a fully upgraded Assault Rifle. Plan your spending around that curve and check the money guide if you are short on funds for upgrades.

All Bosses at a Glance

This table lists every boss in progression order with the item that summons it and the core of the fight. Detailed strategies for each one follow in the sections below.

Turn In the Quest Item

Early Bosses: Spider Crab, Old Pike, Giant Piranha

The Spider Crab is the first boss and an easy one. Summon it with an empty beer can, stay close so it commits to a charge attack, then sidestep as it rushes in. The crab stuns itself, giving you a window for three or four hits — repeat until it dies. Do not wander far away: at range it starts jumping, becomes unpredictable, and can waste enough time to escape.

The Old Pike is summoned with the Beginner Boss Lure and is one of the easiest bosses in the game. It flops around you and tries to hit you with its tail; the damage stings but is not significant. As long as you have bought the shotgun before summoning it, you should be fine.

The Giant Piranha is where fights get real. It is a modified version of the ordinary Piranha you can catch with the customized leech lure, and it is part of the quest chain that unlocks the next island, so you cannot avoid it. Its real danger is the swarm of smaller piranhas it arrives with — thin the minions out with gunfire first, sidestep its lunging bite in a sideways jump, and carry healing items for when the bite connects.

Mid-Game Bosses: Blue Shark, Pufferfish, Tuna

The Blue Shark needs the Standard Boss Lure, and killing it is required to activate the Grill. It charges at you in a spinning pattern, and if it gets close the hit is almost guaranteed, so spacing is everything. The shotgun is an absolute necessity here — consider buying a bullet upgrade before summoning it on the second island.

The Pufferfish takes more setup. Its summon item is a customized Carrot bait, which you receive from the tourist sitting under the tree on the island — catch a Needlefish for him and the bait is yours. The fight itself is simple: the Pufferfish rolls at you slowly and predictably for melee damage. Unload two shells, sprint in the opposite direction, shoot again, and repeat. The only real failure state is getting cornered, so keep the arena open behind you.

The Tuna is summoned with a Professional Boss Lure on Island 4, and because that island is small, its charge is nearly impossible to dodge. There is no clever strategy — the answer is raw damage. With three bullet upgrades on the shotgun, the fight is short; without them, it is a war of attrition you may lose.

Late-Game Bosses: Albatross, Goblin Shark, Whales

The Albatross appears once you lay a caught Tuna on the ground, and it is a genuine skill check. It keeps a long distance that makes aiming hard, and its poop attack rains heavy damage across the area. Stay under cover whenever it retreats to maximum range — that is the signal the poop rain is coming. Your damage windows are right after the rain ends and right after it charges in and soars back up. The sniper rifle is the best tool for the fight, but you have to make your shots count.

The Goblin Shark sits between the Albatross and the final whale in the summon chain and requires the Scientific Boss Lure ($5,800, sold on Island 5). It is optional side content — treat it as a damage check and bring your best gear.

The Bowhead Whale, summoned with a Fish Bucket, has no special trick either: when you see the whale in the air, run as far as you can, because the body slam will mostly kill you if it connects. Stock as many healing items as you can carry, and buy the Assault Rifle with every available upgrade before the fight. The Mutated Bowhead Whale — summoned off the regular Bowhead Whale — is the same fight made lethal, with lava falling from its body that can kill you instantly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Fighting the Giant Piranha while its minions are still up — the swarm does the real damage, so clear it first.
  • Letting the Spider Crab jump by standing too far away; stay close and farm its stun windows.
  • Summoning the Blue Shark or Tuna without shotgun bullet upgrades; both fights assume you have them.
  • Forgetting the delivery step after a progression kill, then wandering around wondering why the next island will not unlock.
  • Bringing mid-tier guns to the Bowhead Whale fights; the body slam plus limited healing punishes under-geared players fast.

Bosses are the backbone of the walkthrough, and several of them tie into the achievements list. If you are playing in online co-op — lobbies support up to 8 players — coordinate summons so nobody triggers a whale while the team is shopping. For per-boss arenas and unlock requirements, see the individual boss pages linked above and the islands overview.
