How to Fish Lure Guide: Every Bait, Fish, and Boss

Regular lures are organized into tiers that roughly follow your progression through the game's areas, from the starting Lighthouse out to Island 5. Each tier has its own catch pool, and a small number of fish appear on more than one tier — Pike and Goldfish, for example, show up on both the free starting bait and the Beginner Lure.

Boss fish are the big exception. They ignore the normal bait pools entirely and only respond to their own special triggers, which are covered in their own section below.

The special quest baits cannot be bought in a normal shop — they come from NPC quest chains instead.

The table below collects the catch pools reported for each regular lure tier. A couple of odd community-reported names, such as Sengarat and Dripper, look like typos but are confirmed real in-game entries. If a fish listed here is not biting for you, double-check that you are fishing in the right area for that tier — location matters as much as the lure itself.

As a rule of thumb, the further into the game an island is, the higher the lure tier it expects. The reported pairings are:

• The starting Lighthouse area: free bait and the Hot Dog.
• Island 2: free bait and the Beginner Lure.
• Island 3: Standard Lure.
• Island 4: Professional Lure.
• Island 5: Scientific Lure.

Note that the free starting bait never fully expires — Island 2 still expects it alongside the Beginner Lure, so there is no reason to stop carrying it early. If you arrive on a new island and nothing bites, your bait tier is usually the first thing to upgrade. Boss fish do not follow the regular bait pools. Each one requires its own trigger — a dedicated Boss Lure, a quest-modified bait, or another special item. The reported pairings are:

• Empty Beer Can: Spider Crab
• Modified Leech: Giant Piranha (see the leeches page for more on leech items)
• Beginner Boss Lure: Old Pike
• Standard Boss Lure: Blue Shark
• Carrot: Pufferfish
• Professional Boss Lure: Tuna
• Scientific Boss Lure: Goblin Shark
• Fish Bucket: Bowhead Whale

The Empty Beer Can, Modified Leech, Carrot, and similar special baits come from NPC quest chains rather than the shop, so you cannot simply buy a substitute when one is missing. Community research also groups Tuna with these quest-chain items, and that is confirmed: the Tuna is a Professional Boss Lure catch that you then lay on the ground to summon the Albatross on Island 4. When a target fish refuses to bite, work through this checklist in order before assuming the lure data is wrong:

1. Confirm you are fishing on the correct island for that lure tier and species.
2. Check your rod and make sure your equipment matches what the spot expects.
3. Verify the bait tier you have equipped — one tier too low will silently fail.
4. Make sure the relevant NPC quest is actually active.
5. Confirm the previous quest item has already been delivered, since unfinished hand-ins block later steps.

Most dead-end fishing sessions trace back to one of these five points. If everything checks out and the fish still will not appear, the catch list itself may have shifted in a recent patch — the game is updated frequently, so compare your notes against the current updates log before giving up on a spot.
