How to Fish Spider Crab Boss: Summon, Fight, and Beat It
How to Fish Spider Crab Boss guide: buy the Beer Can from the Lighthouse Keeper, use the empty can as a lure, dodge its charge attack, and win the boat keys.
Last updated: Aug 25, 2026
The Spider Crab is the first boss in How to Fish, and beating it is the only way off the starting island. You summon it in the water by the Lighthouse by fishing with an empty Beer Can as a lure, then dodge its charge attack and punish it while it is dizzy. Winning completes the Lighthouse Keeper's opening quest, unlocks the 'Who Stole My Beer' achievement, and earns you the keys to his boat. This guide covers the full loop: summoning, preparation, the fight itself, and what to do with your rewards.
Where to Find the Spider Crab
The Spider Crab lives in the water around the Lighthouse on the starting island. The Lighthouse Keeper is the first NPC you meet in How to Fish, and his opening quest asks you to deal with the "long-legged creature" that has been stealing his beer. That creature is the Spider Crab, and it is the first boss of the game.
You cannot stumble into this fight by accident. The boss only appears when you summon it with one specific lure, so you can take as long as you want catching fish, earning money, and gearing up before you ever pull it out of the water. If you are still getting set up, our beginner's guide covers the basics of the starting island, and the money guide explains the fastest ways to earn cash from the Keeper.
How to Summon the Spider Crab
The Keeper tells you that the long-legged creature can only be caught with an empty beer can, so summoning the boss is a small errand chain before it is a fight. Work through these steps in order:
- Catch crabs or shrimp with your basic worm lure and sell them to the Lighthouse Keeper until you have at least $12.
- Buy a can of beer for $12 from the Keeper's shop.
- Give the beer to the Keeper. He will drink it on the spot and hand you back the empty can, which works as a special lure.
- Equip the empty Beer Can on your fishing rod and cast into the water.
With the empty can equipped, the Spider Crab bite is guaranteed — there is no randomness involved. That also means you should not cast until you are genuinely ready to fight, because the boss comes out swinging the moment it is hooked. Read the next section before you throw that line. For more on how lures work in general, see the lure guide.
How to Prepare for the Fight
Do not attempt the Spider Crab right away, even though the game lets you. It deals heavy damage and can kill an unprepared player quickly, so spend a little extra time at the Lighthouse first:
- Eat until you are at full health before casting. Catch a few extra fish and eat them on the spot.
- Keep at least one caught fish in your inventory so you can heal yourself mid-battle.
- Keep selling fish with the worm lure until you can afford the knife for $45. Fighting the boss with a real weapon instead of your bare hands makes a huge difference.
- If you have the spare cash, sharpen the knife for $14 to increase its damage.
Even with the knife, respect the boss — it hits hard enough to end the fight in a few clean connections. Here are the costs worth knowing at the Lighthouse:
| Item | Cost | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Can of beer | $12 | Give it to the Keeper to get the empty can lure |
| Knife | $45 | Your basic weapon for the fight |
| Knife sharpening | $14 | Increases the knife's damage |
| Radar | $10 | Optional purchase before sailing to the next island |
How to Beat the Spider Crab
The whole fight revolves around the Spider Crab's charge attack. Stay close enough that it charges toward you, then move sideways before the charge connects. After a missed charge, the boss becomes dizzy — you will see stars above its head — and stands still for a short time.
That stun is your only safe damage window. Run behind the boss, land two or three hits, then back off before it recovers. Repeat the loop: bait the charge, sidestep, punish the dizzy window, reset. If your health gets low, eat a fish from your inventory and keep going.
One positioning rule matters more than anything else: do not run too far away. When there is too much distance between you and the boss, it starts jumping toward you, which makes the fight slower and much harder to control. Stay at medium range so it keeps using the charge you know how to punish.
Watch the Escape Timer
The white bar beneath the Spider Crab's health bar is an escape timer. If that bar empties before you kill the boss, the Spider Crab disappears and you have to start the encounter over. Community testing puts the Spider Crab's escape timer at about 180 seconds.
The timer creates pressure, but do not let it bait you into bad play. Keep attacking during every safe stun window and the damage will be enough. What you should never do is stand directly in front of the boss and trade damage just to finish faster — it does not end well.
Death Costs You Another Beer Can
Rewards and What to Do Next
Beating the Spider Crab unlocks the 'Who Stole My Beer' achievement, one of the 28 Steam Achievements in How to Fish — check the achievements page for the rest. Then collect the Spider Crab's meat and give it to the Lighthouse Keeper. That completes his opening quest, and he rewards you with the keys to his boat, which finally lets you leave Island 1 and continue the game.
You can also sell the Spider Crab's parts to the Keeper for extra money. Before you sail off, consider buying the Radar from the Keeper for $10 — it is a cheap, useful pickup for the journey to the next island.
Common Mistakes
Most Spider Crab deaths come from the same handful of errors. Avoid these and the fight is straightforward:
- Casting the empty can with no weapon bought. The boss deals heavy damage even against the knife, so never fight it unarmed.
- Going in at low health with no food. Eat to full health first and keep a fish in your inventory for mid-fight healing.
- Trading hits face-to-face to beat the escape timer. Only attack during the dizzy window, then create space.
- Running too far away to stay safe. Excess distance makes the boss jump at you, which drags the fight out and drains the escape timer.
- Ignoring the white escape bar under its health. Keep an eye on it so the boss does not despawn mid-fight.
- Panicking after a death. You keep your rod and knife; you only need to save up for another $12 beer can to try again.
