How to Fish Bowhead Whale Boss: Summon and Beat It

The Bowhead Whale lives on Island 5, the volcano island, which is the endgame stop on the island progression after Island 4. It does not spawn on its own while you fish the local waters. The whole encounter is gated behind a task given by an NPC wearing a yellow protective suit on the island.

Because Island 5 is late-game content, arrive with endgame gear rather than whatever carried you through the earlier islands. Online co-op lobbies support up to eight players, and bringing friends makes both the preparation and the fight noticeably safer.

Summoning the whale is a short quest chain rather than a single action. Work through these steps in order:

1. Reach Island 5 and talk to the NPC in the yellow protective suit to start the creature task.
2. Equip the Scientific Lure and catch five of the island's creatures, then turn them in to the NPC. If you are missing the lure, check the lure guide.
3. Once the NPC's count is complete, you receive the Fish Bucket as the reward.
4. Attach the Fish Bucket to your fishing rod and cast it into the sea to summon the Bowhead Whale.

The Fish Bucket is the summon item every time, so if the whale escapes or you go down, you repeat the summon to retry the fight. Reset your position before casting again so the opening leap does not catch you off guard.

The recommended weapon is the Assault Rifle, and you should buy it before you summon, not after. Upgrade it at least several times first, because an unupgraded rifle makes the damage race against the escape timer much harder than it needs to be.

Bring as many healing items as you can carry. The Bowhead Whale's body slam deals heavy damage when it connects, and the fight punishes greedy players who stand still to shoot. If you are short on cash for the rifle and its upgrades, the money guide covers ways to fund late-game purchases.

The core loop is constant movement. Keep strafing and watch the whale, because the dangerous moment is when it launches into the air: that leap always ends in a body slam on the spot where you were standing, so run as far from the landing zone as you can the moment it goes up.

Your damage windows are while it is airborne and during the brief pause right after it lands. Land your shots in those windows, then start moving again before the next leap. Do not plant your feet to squeeze out extra shots, because the slam will punish it.

Watch the white escape timer bar under the boss's health bar. If your damage output is too slow, the timer empties, the Bowhead Whale leaves, and you have to summon it all over again. That is why the upgraded rifle matters: the fight is a damage race as much as a dodge test.

The kill drops the whale's carcass, and this is the most important line on the page: keep it. Put the carcass in your inventory, carry it up the volcano, and throw it in to trigger the Mutated Bowhead Whale, which is the final boss stage of the chain. The normal Bowhead Whale is a preparation boss rather than the final deliverable, so the run is not over when it dies.

• Selling the carcass. It looks like a big payday, but it is a quest item, so keep it for the volcano.
• Standing at the landing spot. The body slam targets where you were when the leap started, so move early instead of reacting late.
• Ignoring the white escape timer. Slow damage means the boss leaves and you have to re-summon from scratch.
• Summoning under-geared. Buying the Assault Rifle is not enough on its own; upgrade it several times and stock healing items first.
• Treating the kill as the end. Island 5's chain continues into the Mutated Bowhead Whale fight, which is the actual finale.
